Community-led projects
Tairāwhiti Weather Events Reference Group
In March 2023, Whaikaha agreed to support the establishment of disabled people-led groups in regions of Aotearoa, New Zealand, affected by the severe weather events of February 2023.
The Tairāwhiti group was established in September 2023 and continues to meet regularly with financial and secretarial support provided by Whaikaha.
This disabled community-led group represents the voice of disabled people in post-weather event recovery planning in Tairāwhiti. The group comprises up to eight people with various disability experiences and represents a broad range of disability communities.
Progress has been made in drafting a local recovery plan for disabled people, and it is due for submission to the Gisborne District Council.
